Last year, Jonathan Milan was supreme. The Italian won the maglia ciclamino - the purple jersey - with a big lead over Kaden Groves and Tim Merlier. But Milan and Merlier are not there this year. That means that the battle for the points classification is wide open.

From 9 May, when the Giro starts in Albania, the battle will start. Most points can be earned in the flat stages, slightly less on hilly terrain, and the least in the mountains and time trials. Important points can also be won in the intermediate sprints - every chance counts.

The list of contenders is impressive. Team Visma | Lease a Bike comes with a very strong duo: Wout van Aert and Olav Kooij. Van Aert is riding his first Giro and is a rider who can collect points in both the sprints and the difficult stages. Kooij is one of the fastest sprinters in the peloton and can benefit from the work of his teammate.

Mads Pedersen is another top favorite. The Dane from Lidl-Trek has already won points classifications in other major tours and has the right combination of speed and substance. Kaden Groves, who was on the podium of the points classification last year, is also back and knows how to position himself in mass sprints.

Milan Fretin, Matteo Moschetti, Paul Magnier and Sam Bennett are also names to keep an eye on. They all have the sprint legs and the ambition to make a bid for the maglia ciclamino.

In short: the battle for the purple jersey promises to be exciting – without a clear favorite, but with an impressive peloton full of fast men.

This is how the points classification works:

Flat stages (maximum):
50 – 35 – 25 – 18 – 14 – 12 – 10 – 8 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

Average profile:
25 – 18 – 12 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

Mountainous profile:
15 – 12 – 9 – 7 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1

Intermediate sprints (always):
12 – 8 – 6 – 5 – 4 – 3 – 2 – 1
