With Primoz Roglic and Juan Ayuso at the start, the Giro promises to be a battle of the titans. In the Tour of Catalonia, they already impressed earlier this year with a stage win each and a neck-and-neck race, which was ultimately decided by Roglic. But in a three-week Grand Tour, the cards are often different.

Both riders also have rock-solid teams behind them. Roglic is supported by Jai Hindley and Daniel Felipe Martínez, among others, while Ayuso can count on Adam Yates, Jay Vine and the young talent Isaac del Toro. Both Yates and Hindley are serious podium candidates themselves - Hindley even won the Giro once (in 2022).

Behind them lurks a long list of challengers: Thymen Arensman, Richard Carapaz, the Yates brothers, Mikel Landa, Egan Bernal, Derek Gee, Antonio Tiberi, Wilco Kelderman – all in shape and ready to strike as soon as the top favorites drop a stitch.

The preparation also provides food for speculation. In the Tour of the Alps, Michael Storer was unbeatable in the mountains, with Arensman close behind. Ayuso convincingly won Tirreno-Adriatico, while Tiberi, Gee and Hindley also finished in the front. Arensman opted for Paris-Nice and came in a respectable third there.

What makes this year extra exciting is the strong and broad field of participants. No fewer than five former winners are at the start: Roglic, Bernal, Carapaz, Hindley and Nairo Quintana. Last year's Giro was a one-man show by Pogacar, but this year anything seems possible.

Will it be a battle between Roglic and Ayuso, or will an outsider provide a surprise in pink?
