Friday 11 September – Vuelta a España stage 19: Vélez-Málaga → Peñas Blancas. Estepona (210.8 km)

Route

Stage 19 of the Vuelta a España 2026 takes the peloton from Vélez-Málaga to the top of Peñas Blancas above Estepona, over 210.8 kilometres. It is the longest mountain stage of this Vuelta and the second-to-last summit finish. At 4,018 metres of climbing, the stage is tougher than the flat start along the coast suggests.

The first 70 kilometres run flat along the Costa del Sol, via Rincón de la Victoria and Málaga, before the road turns inland towards Cártama and Coín. At km 76.4 the first climb begins: Puerto de las Abejas (14.5 km at 4.3%), with the summit at km 91. After the descent, the run-in to Puerto del Viento (13.1 km at 3.7%) follows at km 98.2, with the summit at km 111.3.

Via Ronda the route descends back to the coast at San Pedro de Alcántara. At km 147.9 lies the uncategorised Puerto del Madroño, a long, irregular transition without steep gradients. Via Estepona the peloton reaches the foot of the final climb at km 192.1: Peñas Blancas (18.7 km at 6.5%), good for 1,216 metres of climbing to the finish line at km 210.8.

Final kilometres

The last 18.7 kilometres run entirely uphill to Peñas Blancas. The road winds through the Sierra Bermeja, with an average gradient of 6.5% and a section of 8.2% in the final kilometre. With 4.3 kilometres to go, the road turns left towards Los Reales, after which the gradient keeps rising until the finish at 1,268 metres altitude.

Recent editions

Peñas Blancas is a summit finish in the Vuelta for the third time. 2022 – Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers), solo from the early breakaway, ahead of Wilco Kelderman and Marc Soler. 2013 – Leopold König (NetApp), ahead of Daniel Moreno and Nicolas Roche.

Scenarios

A day for climbers and mountain specialists with a sting in the tail: the length of the stage and the three climbs leave room for an early breakaway to contest the stage win. For the general classification, the starting point is the stage 18 time trial: after stage 15, Enric Mas (Movistar Team) went into the time trial with a 2:06 lead over Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) and 2:10 over Primož Roglič (Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe), though those gaps may have changed after the time trial.

With only stage 20 remaining as a mountain stage after this one, the GC riders have just two days left to make or defend differences. This threatens a battle on two fronts: the stage win for the early breakaway versus the GC battle among the favourites.

Local

Peñas Blancas lies in the Sierra Bermeja, above Estepona on the Costa del Sol. The climb was previously used as a finish in the 2013 and 2022 Vuelta. Vélez-Málaga, the starting town, is the capital of the Axarquía region in the province of Málaga.

Weather forecast

On Friday, predominantly dry weather is expected in Estepona, with a maximum of 25.3°C and a minimum of 21.0°C. No significant rainfall is expected. In the final kilometres there will be an east-northeasterly wind with speeds of up to 14.6 km/h. At the top of Peñas Blancas, at 1,268 metres altitude, the temperature will be noticeably lower than on the coast.
