Giro d’Italia Women 2026 – Prediction General Classification

The 2026 Giro d’Italia Women once again promises to be one of the defining stage races of the season. With a balanced route combining flat opportunities, punchy terrain and decisive mountain stages, the fight for the maglia rosa is expected to favour the most complete riders in the peloton.

This year’s edition places a strong emphasis on climbing, while still leaving room for tactical racing on rolling terrain. Without an overreliance on time trials, pure climbers and aggressive all-rounders are likely to shape the general classification.

Route in numbers

✅30/05 until 07/06

✅Total distance: approx. 1179.7 km
✅9 stages
✅3 flat stages, 4 hilly stages, 2 mountain stages
✅1 Individual time trial (ITT or TTT)
✅ Total elevation gain: 12.663 vertical meters

Traditionally one of the toughest races on the calendar, the Giro d’Italia Women rewards consistency across all terrains. The mountainous stages are expected to be decisive, but time gaps can also emerge in transitional stages due to aggressive racing.

Below, we break down the expected stage types and the key GC dynamics heading into the race.

Stage overview

Stage 1 – Opening stage (flat) A typical opener designed for sprinters to take the first maglia rosa.

Stage 2 – Spinting again - stage 2 is again an opportunity for sprinters, without any serious climbs.

Stage 3 – Flat stage, some short hills A clear chance for the sprinters. Maybe a strong break of hill specialists try someting on the short climbs.

Stage 4 – Individual Time Trial - The only race against the clock, and it's a mountain time-trial up to Nevegal.

Stage 5 – Transitional stage A tricky day that could suit breakaways, hills in the final to try something for riders with ambitions.

Stage 6 – Sprint! - Day for the sprinters in Brescello, or will someone surprise?

Stage 7 – What to do? A climb with the top at 25 kilometers of the finish? Will the strong teams try to drop the sprinters? And will they come back?

Stage 8 -Mountains! - Big mountain day with unpaved Finestere. Finish traditionally in Sestriere, who will do take pink?

Final stage – Hilly but sprint? - Chance for the sprinters in a stage from Saluzzo to Saluzzo.

The general classification at the Giro d’Italia Women typically rewards riders who combine climbing ability with tactical awareness and team support. Pure climbers hold an advantage on summit finishes, but the absence or limited presence of time trials keeps the competition open.
