Friday May 16th 2025: Stage 7 - Castel di Sangro - Tagliacozzo (168km, hilly - finish top)
Friday 16 May sees the first real mountain stage of this Giro, with a mountaintop finish that will immediately put the classification riders to the test. The seventh stage takes the peloton over 168 kilometres from Castel di Sangro to Tagliacozzo, right through the rugged Abruzzo.
The day starts in Castel di Sangro, where the riders will immediately have to tackle a climb to Roccaraso: 6.6 kilometres long at an average gradient of 6.4%, with a tough section halfway up to 11%. After this first test, the riders will remain at altitude in the Apennines for a while, before a long descent towards the valley.
Then the tough climb of Monte Urano awaits, a new name in the Giro: 4.5 kilometres of climbing at a hefty 9.4%6. The riders then head west to the Vado della Forcella, a long but less steep climb of 21.6 kilometres at 3.6%, interrupted by a short descent after 14 kilometres.
After a long descent and a few rolling kilometres, the finale begins: the final climb to Marsia from Tagliacozzo. This climb is making its debut in the Giro and is 12.6 kilometres long with an average gradient of 5.4%. The last three kilometres in particular are vicious, with sections that climb up to 14%. The finish is at Rifugio Fagus, at an altitude of 1,425 metres.
This stage is ideal for climbers who can handle steep sections well and offers plenty of opportunities for attacks in the final phase.
