Saturday May 17th 2025: Stage 8 - Giulianova - Castelraimondo (197km, hilly)

The eighth stage of the Giro d’Italia is scheduled for Saturday 17 May, a stage that takes the peloton from Giulianova on the Adriatic coast to Castelraimondo in the Marche region. Over a distance of 197 kilometres, the riders will hardly have time to catch their breath: the course is constantly hilly, with a total of around 3,700 to 3,800 metres of elevation gain.

The route takes in a series of challenging climbs, including the Croce di Casale, Montelago and Castel Santa Maria. The absolute highlight of the day is the Valico di Santa Maria Maddalena: a climb of 13.1 kilometres at an average gradient of 7.4%, with sections that climb up to 14%. This pass is at the highest point of the stage and can really thin out the peloton.

After this tough section, the course continues to go up and down, with a few short, steep climbs. The last serious obstacle is the Gagliole, a 700-metre climb at 9.3%, which is only 6.5 kilometres from the finish. This is followed by a fast descent and a flat approach to the finish line in Castelraimondo.

Due to the tough profile and the many climbs, this stage is ideal for attackers and climbers. There is a good chance that the leading group or strong punchers can strike in the end, especially because the finale contains a vicious punchy slope just before the end. It promises to be a day on which GC riders will have to be alert and where the peloton will be put to the test.
