Thursday May 29th 2025: Stage 18 - Morbegno - Cesano Maderno (144km, break/ sprint)
The eighteenth stage of the Giro d’Italia 2025 will take the peloton over 144 kilometres from Morbegno to Cesano Maderno. This stage is a classic transition stage in the final week, where both sprinters and attackers can smell their chance.
From the start in Morbegno, the riders will travel through the hills of the Valtellina, with several short, tough climbs right away. The first real challenge is the climb to Parlasco, which with its 7.6 kilometres and an average gradient of over 6% immediately puts the peloton on edge. After a short descent, a rolling section follows towards the Colle Balisio, a climb of over four kilometres. The riders then descend to Lecco, after which the climb to Ravellino awaits, almost nine kilometres long.
After this hilly zone, the course flattens out. In the last thirty kilometres, the sprinter teams get the chance to control the pace, because the terrain here is almost flat. The stage ends on a local circuit in Cesano Maderno, which is covered several times and guarantees a fast and nervous finale.
This stage offers opportunities for attackers who want to escape in the hills, but if the sprinter teams keep up the pace, a bunch sprint is likely. However, the fatigue from the previous mountain stages can work in the favor of a strong escapee. In short, a stage in which both the fast men and the adventurers can try their luck.
