Giro d'Italia 2025 - Prediction stage 5

Wednesday May 14th 2025: Stage 5 - Ceglie Messapica - Matera (144km, sprint+)

On Wednesday, May 14, the fifth stage of the Giro d’Italia will take the Peloton from Ceglie Messapica to Matera, over a distance of 145 kilometers. The majority of this ride is flat, but the final part is a lot more challenging. About 30 kilometers before the finish, a sturdy hill awaits, after which the course remains wavy and the riders are still presented with some difficult obstacles.

The route starts in the historic Ceglie Messapica, a city with roots that go back to Greek antiquity, but without earlier Giro history. From the center the riders pull west, after which they race after Massafra towards the coast. The first 50 kilometers are almost flat, but after Metaponto the landscape changes and more differences in height follow.

The climb to Montescaglioso is important in the final, which is 2.8 kilometers long with an average increase of 8.6%. After that, the course remains treacherous: a section of 7.1 kilometers at 3.5% towards the Castle of Tramontano, followed by a last slope of 700 meters to 7.9% in Matera, with the top less than two kilometers from the finish.

Although Matera was often the backdrop for mass sprints in the past, and sprinters such as Mario Cipollini and Arnaud Démare have already prevailed, the hilly lock could also offer opportunities to punchers and attackers who want to surprise the sprinters this time.
