Tuesday 8 September – Vuelta a España stage 16: Cortegana → La Rábida (181.1 km)

Route

Stage 16 of the 2026 Vuelta a España takes the peloton from Cortegana to La Rábida, in the municipality of Palos de la Frontera. The stage is 181.1 kilometres long and includes 2,244 metres of climbing, almost all of it in the first two-thirds of the route. It is the first time in the history of the Vuelta that a stage runs entirely through the province of Huelva.

Cortegana sits at an altitude of 650 metres, wedged between two mountain ranges. For the first thirty kilometres the peloton stays around that altitude, with constant small ups and downs. One of these sections rises for 2.3 km at 5.9%. After just over 50 kilometres, heading towards Campofrio, comes a short but sharp section of 900 metres at 9.1%. The last climb of the day begins at kilometre 90: 4.5 km at 4.5%. After the top, the road descends towards the plains of Huelva.

From kilometre 90 the route is flat, with occasional gentle undulations. The route passes the mining region around Minas de Riotinto (km 63), La Palma del Condado (km 111) and Villarrasa (km 114.5, intermediate sprint), before the race turns via Moguer (km 147) towards the coastal area near Palos de la Frontera.

Final kilometres

After Palos de la Frontera (km 155) come several roundabouts: towards Mazagón (km 162), towards Huelva (km 169) and the last one towards La Rábida (km 180). The finale is flat, with a gradient of 0.6% in the final kilometre. No last climb or corner to make a difference: a straightforward finale for a bunch sprint.

Recent editions

La Rábida and Palos de la Frontera host a stage of the Vuelta a España for the first time in 2026. It is also the first time the race has run an entire stage through the province of Huelva. There is therefore no previous result at this finish to fall back on.

Scenarios

A stage for the pure sprinters. The flat route after kilometre 90 and the low gradient in the final kilometre (0.6%) point to a bunch sprint. Matthew Brennan (Visma | Lease a Bike) has already won three stages in this Vuelta and is considered the favourite.

The rolling terrain in the opening phase, with several short climbs between Cortegana and kilometre 90, leaves room for an early breakaway. Whether the break survives will depend on how many teams have an interest in a bunch sprint.

Local

La Rábida is a Franciscan monastery in Palos de la Frontera, located at the confluence of the Tinto and Odiel rivers, with direct access to the Atlantic Ocean. It was from this harbour that Christopher Columbus set sail in 1492 on his voyage to America. The stage marks the first time the Vuelta has organised a full stage in the province of Huelva.

Weather forecast

On Tuesday a sunny and warm day is expected in Palos de la Frontera, with a maximum of 36.5°C and a minimum of 22.5°C. No rain is expected. In the final 50 kilometres there will be a west-northwesterly wind with gusts up to 20.5 km/h, which could create a headwind in the closing stages.
