Thursday July 24th 2025: Stage 18 - Vif – Courchevel Col de la Loze (171.5 km, mountain top-finish)
The eighteenth stage is a true queen of the Alps and takes the peloton from Vif to the top of the Col de la Loze, one of the toughest climbs in modern cycling. The course has almost 6,000 meters of elevation, includes some of the most famous Alpine giants and is the toughest Tour stage in more than 10 years. The first major obstacle is the Col du Glandon, a climb of 21.3 kilometers at 5.1%. This climb is long and irregular and will test the peloton early on.
After a technical descent comes the Col de la Madeleine, 19.2 kilometers at 7.9%. This is one of the toughest climbs of the Tour and can completely tear the peloton apart. After the descent and a short intermediate phase, the final climb to the Col de la Loze follows: 28.1 kilometres long with an average gradient of 6%, but with sections above 10% in the final kilometres. The climb is notorious for its capricious profile, narrow roads and steep hairpin bends.
The scenario of the day will depend on the course of the race and the fatigue in the peloton. Attackers with climber's legs have a chance, but the favourites for the yellow jersey will compete here. The differences can be enormous on this monster climb, where many a classification rider has failed in the past. The arrival on the Col de la Loze is heroic and will definitively put the classification in its place. Who will overcome the 33 metres of altitude per kilometre and win this gruelling stage?
