Vuelta a España 2026 – points classification prediction
The points classification
The points classification of the Vuelta a España is for the best sprinter, or most versatile sprinter, of the race. The leader wears the green jersey, and the rider at the top after the final stage in Granada wins that jersey outright. Points are earned through stage wins, placings in the daily rankings, and intermediate sprints along the route.
The Vuelta 2026 is not a race for pure sprinters. Of the 21 stages, only four finish on flat terrain without a notable final climb: stages 8, 11, 16, and 17. In addition, stage 5 and the final stage in Granada offer a chance for strong sprinters who can survive a short uphill finish. The nine mountain stages and two time trials make the route tough, putting puncheurs and versatile sprinters at an advantage over pure flat-land specialists.
Points per stage
| Stage | Type | Points available | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Time trial (Monaco) | Finish points per regulations | No sprint chance, but classification points for the fastest riders |
| 5 | Flat/light finale (Falset - Roquetes) | Finish points + intermediate sprint | Sprint for strong sprinters |
| 8 | Flat (Puçol - Xeraco) | Finish points + intermediate sprint | Sprint for all sprinters |
| 9 | Mountain finish (Alto de Aitana) | Intermediate sprint en route | No sprint chance at the finish, but points via intermediate sprint |
| 11 | Flat (Cartagena - Lorca) | Finish points + intermediate sprint | Sprint for all sprinters |
| 12 | Mountain finish (Calar Alto) | Intermediate sprint en route | No sprint chance at the finish, but points via intermediate sprint |
| 14 | Mountain finish (Sierra de la Pandera) | Intermediate sprint en route | No sprint chance at the finish, but points via intermediate sprint |
| 16 | Flat (Cortegana - La Rábida) | Finish points + intermediate sprint | Sprint for all sprinters |
| 17 | Flat (Dos Hermanas - Sevilla) | Finish points + intermediate sprint | Sprint for all sprinters, no climb on the route |
| 18 | Time trial (El Puerto de Santa María - Jerez) | Finish points per regulations | No sprint chance |
| 21 | Flat with closing circuit (Granada) | Finish points + intermediate sprint | Sprint for strong sprinters, punchy climb in the circuit |
Points can also be earned on the mountain stages. Intermediate sprints along the route, well before the final climb, yield points for sprinters who cannot win the stage itself. Riders who regularly come through an intermediate sprint first can thus limit the gap to the stage winners of the flat stages.

The limited number of pure sprint chances makes the Vuelta 2026 a race for versatile sprinters and puncheurs. If Mads Pedersen takes the start, his two previous wins in this classification make him the logical favourite: he combines speed on the flat with the ability to survive light gradients. Wout van Aert is his main rival. The Team Visma - Lease a Bike rider wins both on flat terrain and on short uphill finishes, and also frequently picks up intermediate sprint points on days without a mass sprint.
Among the pure sprinters, Matthew Brennan, Jordi Meeus and Alberto Dainese are the names to watch on the four flat stages. They have little to look for on the mountain stages, but can gather points on stages 8, 11, 16, and 17 if their teams control the finish. Bryan Coquard adds another contender to that list as an experienced sprinter.
Among the puncheurs, Magnus Cort is a regular fixture in the Vuelta's points classification. He usually hunts intermediate sprints on the mountain stages, picking up points that pure sprinters miss. Christophe Laporte, as Van Aert's teammate, can both sprint alongside him and capitalise on intermediate sprints. For all these riders, surviving the mountain stages is crucial: anyone who fails to make the time limit on the toughest days automatically drops out of the classification.
