Tour de France 2026 – Youth GC Prediction

The Young Rider Classification

The Tour de France Young Rider Classification is awarded to the rider who performs best in the general classification and was born on or after January 1, 2001. On January 1, 2026, eligible riders are a maximum of 25 years old. The leader wears the white jersey (maillot blanc) in the following stage, while the overall winner keeps the white jersey permanently. From 1975 this classification is kept track off and the leader received white. Between 1989 and 1999 the jersey was not handed out to the leader. In the 2026 edition,  on the start list are eligible, of whom five are serious contenders for a good GC result.

Route and Chances

The 2026 Tour begins with a team time trial in Barcelona (19.7 km) and travels through the Pyrenees, the Massif Central, the Vosges, and the Jura before reaching the Alps. There are eight mountain stages with five summit finishes, including two finishes on Alpe d'Huez (stages 19 and 20). The only individual time trial is stage 16 from Evian-les-Bains to Thonon-les-Bains, covering 26 km. The route demands a complete rider: climbing ability, and a solid time trial. A young climber who loses too much time in the time trial will have limited opportunities to make up for it in the mountains.

Contenders

Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates XRG, born December 26, 2004) is the strongest candidate for the white jersey. The Mexican climber is riding his second Tour de France and possesses the climbing level required to finish high in the general classification. His team also features Tadej Pogacar, the overwhelming favourite for the yellow jersey, which could give del Toro the freedom to pursue his own general classification ambitions.

Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM, born September 24, 2006) is the youngest serious contender at 19 years of age. The Frenchman rides his home Grand Tour as team leader. His climbing ability is exceptional, but the demands of a three-week race and the 26 km time trial remain relatively uncharted territory for him. Juan Ayuso (Lidl-Trek, born March 3, 2002) rides for his own ambitions with his new team in 2026 and combines strong climbing and time-trialling abilities. Cian Uijtdebroeks (Movistar, born February 5, 2003) is a strong climber, but his time-trial capabilities are more limited than those of del Toro and Ayuso.

Tadej Pogacar won the white jersey four consecutive times (2020–2023), the outright record in the history of the classification. Other riders with multiple victories are Andy Schleck (3x), Jan Ullirch (3x), Nairo Quintana (2x) and Marco Pantani (2x). In 2026, Pogacar is no longer eligible due to the age limit. Last year, Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) won the white jersey after finishing third in the general classification; he is also no longer eligible for the Young Rider Classification in 2026.
