Vuelta a España 2026 – ROUTE
A route featuring seven mountain stages, two time trials and a Grand Départ in Monaco, followed by a long ride through southern France to the Spanish border.
The 81st edition of the Vuelta a España doesn't start in Spain, but on the Côte d'Azur. From Monaco, the peloton heads towards the Pyrenees and Andorra over three days, before the race passes through Catalonia and the Comunitat Valenciana to reach the Spanish interior. It's only after the first rest day, following the finish atop the Alto de Aitana, that the focus shifts entirely to the Iberian Peninsula.
The 2026 route includes two time trials – a short opening prologue in Monaco and a longer race against the clock in the third week – and seven mountain stages spread across the three weeks. The final week takes the peloton through Andalusia, with uphill finishes in the style of the Sierra de la Pandera and one last tough mountain stage two days before Granada.

Stage 1 – Monaco > Monaco (9.4 km, time trial)

Our first analysis: what can we expect?
With seven mountain stages and two time trials, this Vuelta spreads the general classification battle across several phases: the opening time trial in Monaco creates immediate gaps, while the finish atop the Alto de Aitana at the end of the first week can already produce a first selection among the overall contenders. That's early for a Grand Tour and means a deficit can already emerge before the first rest day.
The second week features the Calar Alto and the Sierra de la Pandera, two of the toughest climbs on the route, both with steep, sustained final kilometres. Anyone who loses time at that point still needs the third week to make up for it, and that week opens with the second time trial at Jerez de la Frontera – a flat race against the clock that again favours the better time triallists in the overall classification.
The final mountain stages, to Peñas Blancas and the Collado del Alguacil, come two days and one day respectively before the finish in Granada, making them the last chance to shake up the general classification. With the combination of an early decisive mountain finish, two time trials and tough final climbs, the outcome of this Vuelta could remain open right up until the penultimate day.
