Giro d'Italia 2025 - Prediction stage 1

Friday May 9th 2025: Stage 1 - Durazzo - Tirana (164 km) 

The 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia starts on Friday May 9th in Durazzo, Albania, with a 164-kilometre stage that offers challenging climbs and a spectacular finish. The stage includes three climbs, the last of which, the Surrel, could make the difference in the final circuit.

The course starts with 70 kilometres of flat terrain, which offers a relatively quiet start for the riders. This is followed by the first climb to Gracen, a tough 13.5-kilometre climb with an average gradient of 5.2%.

After the descent, the peloton returns to flat terrain and the race reaches 44 kilometres from the finish, where the riders make the first passage over the finish line. Two identical local laps follow, in which the Surrel, a 4.9-kilometre hill with an average gradient of 5.4%, will be a determining factor each time. The first kilometre of the Surrel is particularly steep, with an 8.1% gradient, making the stage extra challenging.

The stage ends after the second climb of the Surrel, followed by a long descent of 11.3 kilometres to the finish in Tirana. The opening stage offers the perfect opportunity for the strong sprinters, but the difficult finale could also provoke an early attack from the climbers.
